I have linked notes in this introduction solely to give you a window into my thinking about language and language teaching. In the following 4 essays, I write through the lens of a language teacher, even though many facets herein can be applied to the teaching of other subjects. We all have an internal - eternal - passion for learning. My job is to help students realize theirs; to make my students feel safe and free from affective filtering.

Fluency in language enlarges our spirit. Comprehensible output empowers us. Language mastery has enabled us to carry along civilization’s history. It enlarges our comprehension of the present, and it inspires us to boldness and inventiveness in our thinking and in our expression of thought.

English, with its multilingual vocabulary and flexibility of grammar, gives us huge swaths of spoken sound variations; unlimited poetic form, and prose of unfettered force. It glorifies the spirit, as it enlarges the intellect.
